Goodbye England's Rose
May you ever grow in our hearts.
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart.
You called out to our country,
And you whispered to those in pain.
Now you belong to heaven,
And the stars spell out your name.

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind:
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in.
And your footsteps will always fall here,
Along England's greenest hills;
Your candle's burned out long before
Your legend ever will.

Loveliness we've lost;
These empty days without your smile.
This torch we'll always carry
For our nation's golden child.
And even though we try,
The truth brings us to tears;
All our words cannot express
The joy you brought us through the years.

Goodbye England's Rose,
From a country lost without your soul,
Who'll miss the wings of your compassion
More than you'll ever know.

Elton John's Diana tribute ignites U.S. charts

LOS ANGELES, Oct 1 (Reuter) - Elton John's recording of "Candle in the Wind 1997," which he sang at the funeral of Princess Diana last month, blew into the U.S. pop charts at No. 1 and smashed the record for first-week sales, according to data issued on Wednesday. The single sold almost 3.5 million copies in the six days since its release on Sept. 22, said a statement from SoundScan, a firm whose point-of-sale system monitors sales in record stores across the country.

The previous record was held by Whitney Houston's version of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," which sold 632,000 units during the week ended Dec. 27, 1992, SoundScan said.

In just six days, "Candle in the Wind 1997" has become the third best-selling single of all time following the Houston song and Los Del Rio's "Macarena," which have sold 4.6 million and 4.2 million units respectively.

In the current charts, "Candle in the Wind 1997" replaces Boyz II Men's "4 Seasons of Loneliness," which had sold about 170,000 units to get to No. 1 the previous week.

SoundScan's system has been in place since 1991, but music industry officials say no single has ever approached the first-week sales of "Candle in the Wind 1997." Indeed, actual sales could be higher still, since many stores offering the single do not normally sell music and are therefore not monitored by SoundScan.

The single carries John's Rocket Records imprint, and is distributed by Hollywood-based A&M Records, a unit of PolyGram NV. The label reportedly has orders for more than 12 million copies in the United States. All proceeds go to the Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial Fund.
